EHCC Lecture Series Online presents: Plastic Pollution: Stories of Recovery, Reduction, and Lessons Learned from Ka'ū with Stacey Breining

Stacey Breining is a Biologist and Educator with the Hawai'i Wildlife Fund. The HWF is one of the partners for our "Current Events" exhibition of ocean debris from Kamilo Beach and artists' responses to the problem of ocean plastic.

The Youth Arts Series Coloring Book

The Youth Arts Series (YAS) turned 5 in October! To celebrate this milestone we’ve created our first ever coloring book. The book is filled with fun pages to color in and enjoy. Each page was created by some of the artists who have helped to make the YAS program so special. In addition, the book includes artwork from 10 talented student artists. Their artworks were selected from our first ever Coloring Book Design Contest.

YAS needs your help! We’re raising money to launch our brand new 3D printing and digital design program. We’re thrilled to announce that the Youth Arts Series recently received a donation of two 3D printers from Vibrant Hawai‘i. This generous donation is the first step towards creating a new art and technology-based branch of our program.

Kealoha Pisciotta is a Native Hawaiian Traditional Knowledge Keeper. She is the President of Mauna Kea Anaina Hou and the founder of Kai Palaoa, a marine protection organization that is working to protect marine mammals and all ocean life, and to restore the abundance of the sea.

Current Events: The daring new exhibition at the East Hawai'i Cultural Center is designed to spur audiences to action while pushing the boundaries of what constitutes art. The exhibition, created in collaboration with the Hawai'i Wildlife Fund, features heaps of plastic debris collected from Kamilo Beach along with tattered old fishing nets, deposited unadorned throughout the EHCC gallery.

This summer the EHCC welcomed the Japanese koto group So-Shin Kai as a collaborator in our musical programs. Inspired by this, our lecturer Dr. Larry Butler invites you to an illustrated Zoom lecture on the Confucian cultural traditions surrounding the traditional musical instruments of East Asia.
